If you have only a handful of people coming to your wedding, chances are you don’t have to worry about where they’re going to sit. But if you have fifty, even a hundred people coming? You’re going to have to plan out a wedding seating chart. This can get complicated as you have to navigate not only the fundamentals of getting the seating you need, but also the politics involved in placing everyone you know in the same room. There are, however, ways to make this process easier:
Before you get to seating guests, you should first decide on the kinds of tables you want. Why? Because the shape of the table will dictate how many get to sit at one. Wedding tables generally come in four shapes—round, oval, square, and rectangular—and which one you choose will depend on your wedding theme and venue.
Draw it out
Visualizing the room will help you decide where to put everyone, so plan on drawing out a diagram of the entire banquet room in order to get started. Alongside the diagram, you should also have a list of all of your guests so that you don’t forget anyone.
Figure out the head table first
A head table is where the bride and groom place themselves as well as their wedding party. You can either have one large, rectangular table for this, or you can divide the group among several tables that are situated around you and your significant other.
Put guests into groups
The easiest way to seat people is to place them with people they already know. So, gather your guest list and start putting people into groups depending on how you or they know each other. For example, you’ll want to have a group for your college friends, family members, work friends, etc.
Chances are you’re going to have quite a few people at your wedding that you don’t know very well, like friends of your parents and such. If that’s the case, ask the people you know for advice on seating them. You don’t want to insult anyone by giving them a bad seat, and there may be some people who don’t get along and can’t be seated at the same table.
